The unity candle is an especially popular item for inclusion in today's weddings. Candles such as these have been popular for the past three decades. When the unity candle was first introduced, not everyone embraced the concept of lighting one candle from two and some frowned upon the practice. However, wedding candles such as these now appear at services conducted by various denominations and a wedding without a unity candle is a rarity.

Wedding candles are almost always white. However, personalized wedding candles can be decorated and inscribed in a number of different ways. Some soon-to-be-married couples choose just a plain white candle with their names and the date of the wedding appearing on it. Others opt for much more elaborate candles. Many are decorated with popular symbols, like the double wedding band and cross or perhaps two hearts. Some candles are pre-printed with appropriate quotes from scripture, allowing the couple to choose from among favorite wedding Bible verses. Wedding candles may also be of the oil variety, with the inscription appearing on the glass that holds the oil and wick.

Stands are also available for these wedding candles. Usually offered in silver or gold tones, a single stand can be purchased for just the unity candle or a stand that holds both the large candle and the two smaller ones that light it can be purchased. Sometimes, the wedding candles and stands can be purchased as a package.
